For Kim

These days I am on vacation with my family and friends. As we checked in and got in the rooms we started complaining that they were small, that the elevator was slow and that the wireless was clunky. Yeah, first world problems.

I got out a bit to breath some fresh air and skimmed through my Twitter feed. My first world problems were immediately washed away as I read this post by Daniel Steinberg. His wife Kim was involved in a horrible car accident and was dying.

I never met Kim. And yet I feel like I knew her, because Daniel sprinkled a few details about her pretty much every time we chatted. Kim was also mentioned pretty often during Daniel’s outstanding presentations. I imagine her kind, warm, friendly, selfless. Like Daniel.

My wife saw me a bit down these days. I have been trying to make sense of this tragedy. I have come to the conclusion that making sense of it is pointless. I have been wasting my time, time that I should spend being thankful for being touched by Daniel and, indirectly, by Kim.

So thank you Daniel, for being such an inspirational speaker and a kind, warm, friendly, selfless person. I feel lucky to have met you many times and next time we meet expect a big hug from me.

P.S. If you want to make a donation in memory of Kim, Daniel has chosen SmileTrain, a charity that helps children in need of cleft surgery (via designatednerd).
